Physical fitness is generally defined as “the ability to carry out daily tasks with vigor and alertness, without undue fatigue, and with ample energy to enjoy leisure-time pursuits and to meet unforeseen emergencies.” (USDHHS, 1996)
Hong Kong Education Bureau’s Guide to Pre-primary Curriculum 2006 states:
Strong physical fitness and good habits are the foundation of healthy growth. Children grow healthily by participating in activities structured in line with their physical and mental developmental needs, and by learning to maintain healthy practices throughout their lifetime.
The activities which teachers choose for their students should be multi-task oriented. I generally prefer vigorous warm-up routine, it escalates the students’ heart rate, and gives me a review of the loco motor skills, and it also aid in elevating body and spatial awareness. Before starting any activity make sure that students know the basic loco motor skills such as running, hopping, sliding, jumping, leaping, etc. Be sure to have ample space so that your students are able to move safely in general space.
The activities such as jumping, hopping, running etc. improve muscular strength and endurance. Components of health-related fitness also include cardio-respiratory endurance, flexibility, body composition, and neuromuscular relaxation.
Let the students standing in self-space in the activity area, with the teacher in the middle. Students may not move until they hear proper instructions. The skill development activity helps you to analyze movement forms in terms of progression from introductory to advanced level of skill performance. If the participated children are in the Elementary Stage 4-5 of Fundamental Movement Skill Phase 2-7 (Gallahue, 2003), they are able to manipulate the objects better.
While rolling the rings, it aids in enhancing the eye hand body coordination. Jumping into the hoops enhance the development of large muscles. Each time they use a different skill to carry out their activity it helps to improve their listening skills and following directions. The normal fitness related activities require teamwork, and specific muscular areas are developed by following like so routines.
